TORONTO N Back!
How far would you go to see a friend?
Jalicia’s 1st trip to Toronto, Canada - April 2024
This is the story of my first solo road trip — and my first time driving across the border! In just under 72 hours, I traveled from Norfolk, Virginia to Toronto, Canada for an unforgettable weekend filled with friendship, music, and adventure.
Planning (Sort Of)
This trip was a total last-minute decision. I knew it meant an early start and a long drive — nearly 700 miles straight through. It would be the longest road trip I’d ever taken on my own. But when I found out that Asake, an artist I’d been low-key obsessed with, was performing in Toronto — and my best friend Shaneka invited me to stay with her — I couldn’t resist.
Flying last-minute didn’t seem reliable, so I decided to drive from Virginia to Toronto. It felt like the perfect mix of adventure and independence. Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York… and finally, Canada! After more than 13 hours behind the wheel, I arrived Thursday night, grabbed some food, and got ready for my first full day.
Day 1: Friday — Concert Day!
Friday was the day. We started with brunch at The EB, then went shopping at Winners and a few local boutiques to find the perfect concert outfit. That night, I finally got to experience the Asake concert in Toronto — and it was absolutely worth the drive. The energy, the music, the crowd — everything felt surreal.
Day 2: Saturday — Exploring and Relaxing
Saturday was more laid-back — brunch, shopping, and a little light partying (because what’s a weekend getaway without a little fun?). I loved exploring Toronto’s local vibe — the people, the food, the fashion.
Day 3: Sunday — The Drive Home
Sunday came too soon. We said our goodbyes, and I hit the road back to Virginia. It was bittersweet, but I couldn’t stop replaying the highlights in my head — the drive, the concert, the laughter, the memories.
Final Thoughts…
For my second time in Canada — and my first time in Toronto — this trip was everything I hoped for and more. My solo road trip from Virginia to Toronto reminded me how freeing it is to chase experiences that make you feel alive.
Would I do it again? Absolutely. Maybe next time, I’ll plan ahead… but where’s the fun in that?
